Oriental Cockroach , Blatta orientalis

General
The male cockroaches are approximately 25mm – females 32mm long.

Reproduction
The female Oriental cockroaches (the most common in the UK) carry the oothecae for about 30 hours, after which time she deposits them, dropping or attaching them near food. Oothecae hatch in approximately 6 weeks, but may be more in cool conditions. In this situation the egg case may represent a biological ‘time-bomb’ waiting to hatch and continue an infestation.

Adult size: 20-24mm
Number of moults: 7-10
Development time:   (Egg to adult) 6months – 2years
Length of adult stage: 3-6months
No. of oothecae produced in female lifetime 11 Average 1-18 Range
No. of eggs produced per oothecae 16-18

Significance
Oriental cockroaches are poor climbers on smooth surfaces, which may limit their distribution within a building. They appear to be cold tolerant in that they are often found outside buildings, in drains, gardens, sewers, and external brickwork.
