Flying Insects
Untitled Document

Cluster Fly , Pollenia rudis

General
Large fly up to 10mm in length with a wing span of up to 20mm. Thorax has a distinctive dark greyish/olive colour and is covered in golden hairs. The abdomen has a chequered pattern. Wings are held at rest folded tightly on top of the abdomen.

Significance
No real pest status. They build up huge numbers in winter months and hibernate in ‘buildings’ in there hundreds or thousands.

Control
Dust/mist application of insecticide. ULV treatment in late Autumn or early Winter and again in early Spring. Dichlorvos strips. Insecticide baits are ineffective as adult flies do not actively feed when they overwinter in properties.  If flies congregate on walls or surfaces treat using a residual insecticide.
