Flying Insects
Untitled Document
Honey Bee, Apis mellifera

General
Because there are many variations and strains within the species identification can be difficult. The basic form is a dark brown head, thorax and abdomen with well-developed hairs at the intersegmental junctions of the abdomen thorax and legs.
Wings have strong veins but the apical tip is generally without. Workers are 12-15 mm long, queens 16-20mm long and males (drones) 14-188mm long.

Significance
Bees may exploit houses to build nests. Individuals can sting humans. Some humans are hypersensitive to the sting and require medical attention. Wherever possible bees should not be killed as they are an important pollinator.

Control
Classed as a domesticated animal. If bees are a nuisance try to find the owner or contact local bee keeper to remove the swarm. If remedial action is necessary the use of a residual insecticide approved for the treatment of bees is acceptable.
