Black Rat, Ship Rat, Rattus rattus
General
This rodent has been with us in the country the longest. It was originally thought to have been brought back with the Crusaders. Without doubt, vessels carrying cargoes of cotton, corn etc. would have provided ideal travelling harbourages along with a ready supply of food.
Habits   
Must drink water daily unless food is very moist. They are considered omnivorous but if available, fruit and vegetables are preferred.It is avery good climber, rare in the UK but still found in some port areas.       

Colour: Black to brown or grey with lighter underside.
Ears: Large
Eyes: Large and prominent
Tail: Longer than head and body
Weight (adult): 80-300g
Litters per year: 4-6
Litters size: 4-8
Maturity: 2-3 months
Average life span: 12 months
