General
The open wingspan of the adult moth is 15mm-25mm. The upper side
of forewings are bronze-brown in colour with several dark brown
to black flecks or spots. Characteristics are unreliable, it is
advisable to consult an expert.
Significance
Feeds on dried and decaying organic material. Found both as a storage
moth attacking wheat and flour and as a domestic pest where it
will damage textiles, carpets etc. It is found more commonly in
domestic premises than other storage moths. Cold-tolerant it will
survive the British winter in unheated premises. Often infestations
originate from birds’ nests.
Control
Infestations develop in undisturbed areas. Regular household cleaning
will help prevent infestation. Areas under heavy furniture are
particularly prone to attack. The roof space should be checked.
Treatment consists of identifying the source of the infestation,
destroying any infested commodities and applying a residual insecticide
to infested areas e.g. cracks and crevices, soft furnishings, floorboards,
door frames etc. ULV space spray treatment will also be useful
in controlling any infestation.
