Confused Flour Beetle – Tribolium confusum

General
The adult beetle length is 3mm-4.4mm. The shape is elongated and the antennae have a gradual five-segmented club. It is easily mistaken for the Rust-Red Flour Beetle, which has distinct three-clubbed antennae. Although these beetles have wings, they rarely fly, if at all.

Significance
It is one of the most common beetle pests of stored products and a major pest of cereals in particular. A very common pest in flour mills in the UK it has also been recorded on peas, beans, spices, drugs, chocolates, dried fruits and bones. It is unable to feed on undamaged grain.

Control
Infested commodities should be isolated and destroyed, or failing this fumigated.
The structure and fittings of the infected areas should be treated with a residual insecticide. This treatment may be supplemented with the use of an ultra-low volume insecticide application. Professional help may be required.
