General
The adult is a greyish moth with a pattern of two bands across the
forewings and a wingspan of 12mm-18mm. Identification is difficult
seek professional help. The mature larva is 12mm-14mm long, creamy
white with a brown head capsule and brown body markings. There
are three pairs of jointed thoracic legs and five pairs of abdominal
pro hyphen legs.
Significance
Commonest moth pest into the UK. It becomes established only
in heated premises.
Dried fruit, vegetables, nuts, oil seeds, pulses, copra, carobs,
spices and citrus pulp are occasional hosts. The larva contaminates
and spoils foods with excreta frass and webbing. The adult does not
feed on solid food and tends to fly at dawn and dusk.
Control
Find the sources of infestation. Destroy or fumigate. Thoroughly
clean the area and apply a residual insecticide. A ULV may also
be appropriate and professional advice is recommended.
